Tips on Preventing Water Damage

Early detection is the key to avoiding many types of home water damage. Although some extreme causes of water damage aren't fully avoidable, like major floods, a lot of home water damage starts small and then grows into a major problem, like a running toilet finally flooding your bathroom while you're out of town. If you can anticipate these problems or spot them as they occur, you can save yourself a huge amount of hassle and repair costs.

In your effort to prevent water damage, it is important to be aware of typical trouble spots where it strikes. These are found all over your house, both inside and out, and include things like your kitchen and bathroom plumbing fixtures, your basement sump pit, and your roofing materials.

You should get in the habit of regularly checking these areas for signs of trouble. Do this at least a couple times per year - the more often, the better.

Use the infographic on this page as a checklist of areas to inspect in your home. It also contains tips on what to look for, and how to maintain, these areas.

In addition, if you live in a flood-prone area, learn about steps you can take to prepare for flooding, including having flood control devices like sandbags or flood barriers on hand. If groundwater presents an issue for your property, ensure that your basement is protected with a reliable sump pump and a high quality backup system, like a battery backup sump pump or a water powered sump pump.
