Single Zone: Waterbug Sensor-Based Water Leak Detector

water detection system

The Waterbug leak detector alarm is designed to detect the ingress of water in sensitive areas where high value equipment, information, or materials are present.

Waterbug Overview:

  • Monitors for water leaks and outputs an audio/visual alarm
  • Can be connected to a building management system (BMS) and a solenoid valve to switch off the water supply
  • Is capable of working with a variety of detection devices, including sensor cables and probes (see information about sensors below)

There are two Waterbug versions, both of which can be connected to a BMS:

  • Waterbug+Plus, which has an audio alarm and lights on the panel
  • The standard Waterbug, a blind box with no alarm or lights on the panel

Common Waterbug applications include: Archive rooms, communications rooms, computer rooms, electrical switch rooms, boiler houses, plant rooms, small data centers, and coffee/break rooms.

Multi-Zone: GWD Sensor-Based Water Leak Detector (up to 128 Zones)

water leak detection equipment

The GWD offers multiple zone leak detection monitoring for up to 128 individual areas. Like the Waterbug, the GWD is designed to detect the ingress of water in sensitive areas where high value equipment, information, or materials are present, and it can work with the same variety of sensors as the Waterbug (see sensor information below).

GWD multi-zone system overview:

  • Monitors for water leaks and outputs an audio visual alarm relevant to the zone
  • Monitors for faults on the cable and can detect cable breaks and broken connections
  • Can be connected to a BMS and other devices, such as solenoid valves, to switch off the water supply

When it detects the presence of water the GWD will go into "alarm" status, sounding a buzzer and illuminating a LED light specifying the zone where the leak occurred. When in alarm status, the relay will change over, allowing onward signaling of the event and mechanical switching of valves and pumps. Two common alarm outputs are standard, however, individual output relays can be used to perform a function specific to each zone.

Typical applications include multi-zone monitoring of: archive rooms, communications rooms, computer rooms, electrical switch rooms, boiler houses, plant rooms, and large data centers.

The GWD multi-zone system has been successfully installed in large data centers where there is a presence of chilled water.

Sensor Types

The Waterbug and GWD multi-zone system can both use a variety of sensors. The most common are listed below. See the sensors' product pages below for more information about them.

Oil Leak Detection Products

oil leak detector

Aqualeak oil leak detection systems provide alarm monitoring of oil based substances such as diesel, heating oil, and some chemicals and acids. Solutions range from simple systems designed to monitor one specific place to sophisticated multi-zone alarms with battery backup that can switch valves and sump pumps. Leaks are detected via the Redeye sensor. By preventing expensive cleanup operations or losses of valuable liquids, leak detection can produce substantial savings.

Single Zone: The Oilbug Oil Leak Detector

The Oilbug provides single zone detection of substances such as oil and diesel. It works with a sensor unit called the Redeye (sold separately, info below), which employs sophisticated Optoschmitt technology to determine the presence of opaque liquids.

Oilbug overview:

oil leak detector
  • Provides spot monitoring for oil and diesel leaks
  • Works from a mains or an external 12 – 24 VAC supply
  • A volt free relay output allows onward connection to other systems, such as a BMS

When it detects the presence of oil or diesel, the Redeye sensor puts the Oilbug into an alarm state. There are two versions of the Oilbug: the standard Oilbug and the Oilbug+Plus. The standard Oilbug has no local alarm outputs and is simply a blind box connected via a volt free relay to the building management system (BMS). When a leak is detected, the relay will changeover and the BMS will alert to the situation. The Oilbug+Plus has the same functionality as the standard Oilbug with the addition of a local audio and visual output on the alarm panel.

Typical applications include:

  • Oil/diesel storage tanks
  • Fuel feed pipelines
  • Boiler houses
  • Factory/plant rooms

The Oilbug can use up to 2 Redeye sensors wired in parallel attached, allowing more than one area to be monitored simultaneously.

RGO Multi-Zone Oil Leak Detector

oil leak detector

The RGO offers multi-zone oil leak detection monitoring for up to 32 individual areas. The RGO utilizes the same Redeye Sensor (sold separately, info below) that the Oilbug uses, which can detect the presence of oil, diesel, and some chemicals and acids.

RGO multi-zone system overview:

  • Multi-zone oil leak detection system with audio and visual alarm
  • Comes with 2 common alarm volt-free changeover relays for onward signaling
  • Battery backup available, allowing the system to remain functional after a power outage

When the Redeye sensor alerts the RGO system to the presence of oil, diesel, or some additional chemicals, the system goes into alarm state, sounding an audio warning and illuminating a visual indicator that shows the zone that the leak occurred in.

Typical applications include multiple-area monitoring of:

  • Oil/diesel storage tanks
  • Fuel feed pipelines
  • Boiler houses
  • Factory/plant rooms

Oil Sensor: The Redeye Oil Sensor Probe

oil leak detector

Designed for use with either the Oilbug or RGO multi-zone alarm system, the Redeye is an adjustable floor mounted probe that detects oil based substances, such as diesel and fuel oil.

Using the principle of Optoschmitt technology, the Redeye detects changes in the refractive index from the surface it is looking at. When it detects a change, it notifies the alarm controller.

Its height is fully adjustable between 0 and 25mm to allow for small amounts of liquid to be present (for instance in a drip tray) before an alarm goes off.
